Newark School’s Diaspora Celebration Honors Hip-Hop, Creativity

The annual event honored 80s and 90s hip-hop and its influence on creativity, advocacy and entrepreneurship.

NEWARK, NJ — Students, teachers and administrators recently gathered for KIPP Team Academy’s third Annual Diaspora Celebration, which honored 80s and 90s hip-hop and its influence on creativity, advocacy and entrepreneurship.

According to a news release from the school, the event featured homages to Queen Latifa, Tupac, Spike Lee, Nas, Public Enemy and N.W.A., and was a celebration of black history. The event was sponsored in part by the Newark Arts Council, and featured food, music, dancing and Afrocentricity.

The Feb. 27 event is just one of many that make up the school’s diverse culture, administrators said:

“Communal and cultural pride are baked into the DNA of the school, which doesn’t begin or end with Black History Month. This event is, instead, a celebration of what KIPP NJ and KIPP TEAM Academy espouse every day of the year.”
